The plastic injection moulds are the most common method for producing plastic articles. Being a fast and standardized large-scale production process it is widely used in the Automotive Industry. This is because plastic allows the weight reduction of the car and contributes to the rapid introduction of innovations or design changes, improving its functionality.
Typically these moulds are complex and expensive, which implies that the materials used in these applications have unique characteristics that allow their use in the most demanding applications. For this, choosing the most appropriate material is critical.
Elements such as the number of uses, the type of plastic to be injected, the size of the mould and the desired surface finish should therefore be considered. Also the characteristics of the material itself, such as hardness, toughness, wear and corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and material purity, should be considered.
