Tool steels are available in different combinations of alloys to suit different application fields. In this sense, it is extremely important to select the right tool steel for its purpose. As regards tool steels for plastic moulds, these require a high surface finish, especially when looking for a high gloss finish. In these cases it is of extreme importance besides the selection of steel, to also create the appropriate surface preparation techniques. To obtain a mirror-finished surface, the preparation process must involve a number of grinding and polishing steps performed in a clean workplace. High gloss surface finish reduces risk of failure and therefore has an impact on mould productivity.
